Discovery and Location

  • Discovered on 15 June 1955, two days after the discovery of the diamond pipe Mir by Soviet geologist Vladimir Shchukin and his team.
  • The nearby settlement of Udachny is named after the deposit.

Characteristics

  • Approximately 640 meters (2,100ft) deep, ranking it as the third deepest open-pit mine globally.
  • Estimated reserves of 225.8 million carats (45.16t) of diamonds.
  • Annual production capacity of 10.4 million carats (2.08t).

Ownership and Control

  • Controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa since 2010.
